Context

Barnes & Noble, Inc. is a premier American bookseller, a Fortune 1000 company, and the nation's largest operator of retail bookstore outlets. With 627 retail stores across all 50 U.S. states, the brand seamlessly merges a historic brick-and-mortar presence with a major digital storefront offering books, NOOK ebooks, magazines, music, movies, toys, and games.

As part of a strategic modernization effort, Barnes & Noble initiated a comprehensive renovation of its flagship headquarters store located at 122 Fifth Avenue in New York City. For this high-profile architectural redesign, the company sought to pioneer an innovative retail storefront by prototyping a complete, state-of-the-art transparent LED display across its facade windows.

Solution

Street Co’ was appointed as the technical partner to engineer and supply a turnkey, customized transparent adhesive LED display solution. Designed to be suspended or directly adhered behind the glass windows, the ultra-lightweight architecture ensures that the screen adds negligible load to the structural glass facade.

By utilizing precise CAD floor plans, Street Co' developed a system that achieves maximum visual vibrance while maintaining exceptional structural invisibility:

  • Micron-Grade Integration: Utilizing a proprietary solid optical glue, the entire emission layer is integrated directly into an optical lens baseboard, resulting in a structural profile thickness of a mere 1mm to 3mm.
  • Advanced Circuitry: The product series adopts self-developed bare die driver ICs and micro-grade light-emitting chips mounted on a highly transparent PCB substrate.
  • Optimized Pixel Pitch: A 6mm pixel pitch (Pitch 6mm) was selected to provide the perfect equilibrium between crisp pixel density—ideal for rendering futuristic, high-definition digital content curated by Technalia—and a light structure weighing less than 3 kg / sqm.
  • System Redundancy & Autonomy: Every cabinet operates independently with its own dedicated power supply and receiver cards. The structural framing of each cabinet was custom-tailored to align perfectly with the specific window layout of the flagship store.

Challenge

Manhattan's Fifth Avenue is universally acknowledged as one of the most prestigious, competitive, and heavily trafficked commercial avenues in the world. With thousands of pedestrians passing by daily, the storefront required a transformative, dynamic medium to arrest attention and welcome visitors. However, in a metropolis already saturated with aggressive digital billboards, the primary objective was to command attention with elegance and architectural harmony.

To realize this vision, brand consultancy firm Miguel Sal & Co approached Street Co’ to explore cutting-edge display innovations. Inspired by a landmark 250 sqm transparent LED installation engineered by Street Co’ for Primark on Madrid’s Gran Vía, the team sought to apply a similar architectural philosophy to the New York flagship: transforming 200 sqm of traditional window glass into an active digital canvas running 24/7.

The technical constraints were strict:

  1. Visual Impact: Run continuous, inspiring content to engage the New York public 24 hours a day.
  2. Structural Transparency: Maintain a high permeation ratio to allow natural daylight to flood the store interior during daytime hours.

Strategic Business Value: Converting a massive glass facade into a transparent LED display provides dual rewards. Visually, it establishes an unforgettable landmark. Financially, it introduces a premium retail media network, allowing the retailer to monetize the space by showcasing vendor or publisher products on Fifth Avenue for an additional premium.
