LED Ribbons — Gatwick Airport (proposal)

Concept & location

No items found.

For Gatwick Airport (London), Street Communication developed a complete design and engineering proposal in 2023 for a set of LED ribbons in a passenger area. The project did not go ahead: this page presents the solution we proposed.

Our proposal included a 64.8-metre central curved LED screen ribbon suspended above the lounge, and two north and south ribbons lined with RGB LED strips over 138 metres. It covered every step: parametric shape design, structural engineering, production, content design, installation and maintenance.

The central ribbon was based on our Flexible LED technology — see our Airport solutions page for more on this type of project.

The proposed project

Our proposal included two complementary elements:

  • Central LED ribbon — one continuous curved LED screen, 64.8 m long and 0.8 m high, on a steel structure. Suspended above the seating area, it was designed to twist in space so that the images could be seen from every direction.
  • North and south ribbons — two aluminium ribbons of 70 m and 68 m (138 m in total), each fitted with a line of controllable RGB LED strips to extend the light effects across the terminal.

Our approach

Street Communication proposed a turnkey process in three phases.

1. Shape design

  • Feasibility study for production
  • Rationalisation of the shape: several proposals, built as a parametric model (Rhino / Grasshopper)
  • Material proposal and identification of the fixing points
  • Coordination with the structural engineer
  • Production-ready drawings, with a revision loop to finalise the shape

2. LED cabinet and structural engineering

  • Structural drawings and stability calculations
  • 3D execution model and workshop drawings
  • Material list, installation drawings (DWG) and assembly process

3. Production and tests

  • Manufacturing of the LED modules, cabinets and structure
  • Quality control and tests in the factory before shipping

Proposed LED technology

Equipment planned in our proposal:

  • Flexible LED modules with a 1.66 mm pixel pitch for the curved surfaces of the central ribbon (about 52 m²)
  • Standard indoor LED with a 1.5 mm pixel pitch (about 5 m²)
  • Protective GOB (glue-on-board) coating on the LED modules
  • Controllable RGB LED strips for the north and south ribbons
  • Dedicated control system and spare modules

Proposed schedule

Our schedule planned about 4.5 months of work before the equipment would arrive on site:

  • Design: 2–3 weeks
  • Engineering: 2–3 weeks
  • LED and structure production: 8 weeks
  • Quality control: 1 week
  • Transport: 6 weeks
  • Customs: 1 week

Followed by 4 weeks of on-site installation and 1 week of training for the operating teams.

Content & maintenance

Our proposal also covered the content: a storyboard and a colour palette were defined for the ribbon's videos, inspired by flowers and organic textures, with tones ranging from red and orange to pink and violet.

We proposed maintenance over 10 years: 5 years included, plus 5 additional years.
