TBES PARIS

Outdoor flexible LED

Client : DISNEYLAND

Early 2020 StreetCo’ was contracted by Disneydand to install a outdoor flexible LED Spire on the famous castle.

Since April 1992, Disneyland® Paris has given several generations the opportunity to experience unforgettable moments in the pure Disney tradition.
Disneyland Paris is Europe’s leading tourist destination, thanks to its two theme parks, seven Disney Hotels and the Disney Village® entertainment center.

Context / environment : Disneyland

Disneyland wanted to install an LED column on one of the castle’s towers to broadcast animated images on the castle tower.

The castle is an iconic monument in the Disney park and is highly visible to all visitors. Many photos are taken in front of the castle and the tower is very visible from afar because of its height and size.

Unfortunately, the COVID crisis did not allow this project to happen, but the challenge of this project was very special and our teams had a lot of fun working on it.

Solution to install a flexible column

Assuming the optimum value of P30 – how data is mapped onto the spire. A P30 screen would require about 13,460 lights for the spire.

Locations to sample the image to display correctly on a conical surface. Since the cone gets thinner towards the top, we have to sample less towards the top of the image – thus data loss will occur at these locations.

Horizontal rails could be mounted as concentric rings around the spire. Each row would be addressed individually. Most of the deformation of the grid happens towards the top of the spire, thus less information will be lost by only using the lower part of the spire.

Materials & laboUr

After studying the feasibility of the custom solution at length with the engineers at Street Communication, the team settled on a solution of Outdoor Flexible LED screen.

A ceiling support structure is also studied at length until the end of the project to achieve a perfect result and integration allowing the client to see only the part desired by the architects.

Challenge to install a LED Wall and LED floor

For this project, the biggest challenge was to integrate the screens perfectly in order to have a rendering that fits well with the facade of the tower and that the image is not distorted.

To create fluid images and displays the separation of the screen should be kept consistent, a possible strategy for populating different sized elements with lights.

The number of items is always kept 20mm apart by checking the circumference of the spire at given heights.

Impact : Install Flexible LED COLUMN

The screens would have broadcast images of the famous Disney characters on the castle tower.
